PLAYBOOK EDITOR

This dialog lets you:

  • Alter your team's playbook by editing each play.
  • Save any team's playbook to a ".playbook" file.
  • Import ".playbook" files into your current universe.

Using these tools, you can create multiple customized playbooks and save each one to disk. All aspects of each playbook can be edited. This includes the name used for each of the 9 folders (there are 10 plays in each folder).

Use the dropdown listboxes on the right side of the Play Designer to select a play to edit, and to make changes to the currently displayed play.

Each playbook holds 60 offensive plays and 30 defensive plays. The last 6 offensive plays in each book may not be edited. These 6 plays are hard-coded to the following choices:

  1. Kneel Down
  2. Fake Punt (Run)
  3. Fake Punt (Rollout)
  4. Fake Field Goal
  5. Punt
  6. Field Goal

EDITING OFFENSIVE PLAYS

To edit a play, select the play by choosing the folder that it is in, and then selecting the play from the drop-down listbox for that folder. You can change the name of the play by editing the text in the Play Name textbox.

Formations

The Play Designer offers 22 different offensive formations. The five basic formations are shown here. The Play Designer also includes "3rd down" variations of several formations. The notable difference in 3rd-down formations is that the 3rd running back from your team's depth chart is used in place of the 2nd running back. This allows you to designate a "3rd down back" by placing him 3rd on your depth chart, and then using these formations to take advantage of that player.

(Generally, a 3rd down back will have skills better suited to passing plays, such as 'Receiving' and 'Blocking', but will not be a strong rusher).

Play Types

Rush Play (Standard)

Basic rushing play in which the quarterback hands the ball to a running back in the backfield (behind the line of scrimmage).

Toss Play

Rushing play where the quarterback tosses the ball to the running back. Lets the ball carrier get to the outside more quickly, but increases the chance of a fumble.

Sweep Play

Rushing play in which the guards "pull" away their normal blocking assignments at the line of scrimmage and block ahead of the ball carrier around the outside.

Draw Play

A delayed rushing play, often made to look like a passing play, in which the offense lets the defenders get into the backfield before handing the ball to the ball carrier. Especially effective against the blitz.

Trap Play

A handoff running play in which the off-side guard pulls into the backfield to provide an extra block closer to the point of attack.
End Around A handoff running play where a wide receiver runs behind the quarterback, gets the ball, and then attempts to rush the ball up the other side of the field.
Pass (Standard) The basic passing play in which the quarterback drops back in the pocket and tries to find an open receiver.
Pass (Rollout) Passing "option" play in which the quarterback runs out of the pocket immediately after hiking the ball. The near-side guard pulls to provide blocking outside the pocket. The quarterback will throw the ball if he sees an open receiver, but has the option to rush the ball if he thinks it will be effective.
Pass (Bootleg) Like the "rollout", but without any lead blocking by the near-side guard. This type of play is sometimes called a "naked bootleg" because the quarterback rolls out without any blockers.
Pass (Screen) A pass play in which the near-side guard pulls and provides a lead block in front of the primary receiver (who receives the ball in the backfield).
  • "Near-side" denotes a player on the same side as the rushing hole.
  • "Off-side" denotes a player on the away from the rushing hole.

EDITING DEFENSIVE PLAYS

Each playbook holds 30 defensive plays, divided into 3 folders. By default, these folders are named "Run Defense", "Pass Defense" and "Balanced". However, you can rename these folders and organize your plays in any way you want.

Defensive plays are similar in structure to offensive plays. The first choice is the formation. Once the formation is set, Football Mogul lets you assign a different defensive role to each of the 11 players on the field. Some responsbilities are not available to all players. For example, you can't tell defensive tackles to run a "corner blitz".
