DEFENSE DIALOG

The Defense Dialog allows you to make changes in your starting defensive team. Using the Up and Down keys, you can move players from position to position in your defense.

The Swap button lets you bring players from your bench up onto the starting defensive team.

The Release button lets you release players completely from your bench. Most teams carry about 30 total defensive players.

The top list box shows your starting 11 defensive players for a standard defensive formation. The positions listed to the left of this box (DE, DT, etc.) are provided for guidance only. When Football Mogul chooses players for a formation, it will pick the first uninjured players listed at the required positions regardless of where you place them on this list.

The names of players whose contracts are about to expire are shown in parentheses. This is to help you pick out the players whose contracts you wish to renegotiate, and those who you wish to release to the free agent pool.

The bottom list box shows all defensive players on your bench. Many of these bench players are used during a typical game, when your team when each team uses different defensive formations for different situations. For example, on a passing down, a team might use the Dime Defense which requires having 6 defensive backs on the field. The four on the starting team (two cornerbacks and two safeties) will be used, and two more from the bench (the first bench safety and first bench cornerback) will be used on that play.

POSITION DESIGNATIONS

Because formations pick a number of players from each position, a player's listed position is actually more important than how the players are organized on the Defense Dialogs.

For example, if you want a Defensive End to play your Nose Tackle, you cannot simply put the player in the spot labeled "NT" in your starting defense like this:

Defensive Starters

In the above example, you would need to change Albert Haynesworth's position to "Defensive Tackle" for the game to put him at Nose Tackle in your defensive formations. To change a player's position, click his position in his Scouting Report.

Data Display

The Positions column shows the position that the player is capable of playing. The abbreviations are:

  • DE = Defensive End
  • DT = Defensive Tackle
  • LB = Linebacker
  • NT = Nose Tackle (a team's single Defensive Tackle)
  • S = Safety
  • CB = Cornerback

The rest of the line shows key statistics for the player's position:

Tackles

Credited each time the player tackles the player with the ball on a play.

PD

A 'Pass Defensed', also known as a 'Knockdown', is credited when a player is deemed responsible for deflecting a thrown ball to cause an incomplete pass. Only about 1/3 of all incomplete passes result in a PD being credited. However, PDs are a the best indicator of a player's pass coverage abilities.

Int

An Interception. Credited when a thrown pass is caught by a defender.

Sack

Credited for each time the player tackles the Quarterback behind the line of scrimmage. If two players cooperate on a sack, each is credited with one half (.5) sack.
