LEAGUE EDITOR
NOTE: You must
be in Commissioner
Mode to use
the League Editor.
Baseball Mogul comes with a League Editor, which allows
you to redesign your baseball universe by editing each
team, or by editing the entire league. The League Editor
is available from the Tools Menu.
For help creating a new
team, click here.
Editing
Team Info
Using
the team list in the upper left, select the team you want
to edit. You can do this by either scrolling down through
the names using your mouse, or by selecting the box and
hitting the up and down arrow keys.
Team Home and Nickname
The first box, marked 'Home', designates what region
your home games are played in. The second box is the
nickname of your team. Combined, these create your team's
full name.
For example, you might call
a team the Colorado Cornhuskers. Although the team's
home city is actually Denver the 'Home' field should
contain the word 'Colorado' and the nickname field will
be 'Cornhuskers'. Typing these correctly helps the
SportsWriter technology write coherent news stories
about your team.
Three Letter
Abbreviation
This three
letter code will be used to mark your team in various
displays throughout Baseball Mogul. This is especially
important for teams like New York and Chicago, which
have two teams apiece. We use NYN for the New York Team
in the N League, and NYA for the New York team in the A
League.
Home City
You can select
one of over seventy major cities using this drop-down
box, or you can use the City Editor to enter your own.
Select the city for your team - this helps determine the
income of your team, population around your home stadium
and other factors.
Division
This allows you
to place the team in one of the divisions. Select a
division from the drop down box, and hit refresh to
update the league structure.
Fan Loyalty
The loyalty of
a team's fans is rated on a scale of A to F (A is the
best, and F is the worst). The more loyal, the more
money you'll make from ticket sales and broadcast
contracts in the short run. Over the years, fan loyalty
can be damaged by high prices, pay TV and poor
performance. Similarly, a team's fans will become more
interested as the team performs well or management
lowers ticket prices.
Farm System
The quality of
a team's Farm System is rated on a scale from 50 to 100.
A higher quality farm system contributes to the
year-to-year development of its minor league talent. A
team's Farm System rating is directly linked to its expenditures in this area.
Alternatively, it can be directly edited in the League
Editor.
Scouting
The quality of
a team's Scouting Staff is rated on a scale from 50 to
100. Highly-rated teams will have the most accurate
Scouting Reports. A team's Scouting Staff rating is
directly linked to its expenditures
in this area. Alternatively, it can be directly edited
in the League Editor.
Medical Staff
The quality of
a team's Medical Staff is rated on a scale from 50 to
100. Highly-rated teams will have fewer injuries, and
players will heal from injuries somewhat more quickly.
This effect is not large, but it can make a difference.
A team's Medical
Staff rating is directly linked to its expenditures
in this area. Alternatively, it can be directly edited
in the League Editor.
Cash
The number of
dollars in this team's bank account. If this number is
negative, the team is in debt and may
not sign free agents or renew contracts.
Wins and Losses
Editing wins
and losses will change the team's place in the
standings, but it will not retroactively change the
results of games that have been played.
You
can also create new teams with this
screen. See Creating New Teams
for more information.
Commissioner Options
These options are
primarily used for running online
leagues.
Hide
Peak Ratings
Hides 'Peak'
ratings for all players. Although this feature is
often used in online leagues,
it can also be useful in single-player mode to make
player development less predictable.
Hide
Overall Ratings
Hides
'Overall' ratings for all players.
Trading
Deadline
Checking this
box disables trades after July 31st.
Annual Inflation
Increase
Check this box to have Baseball Mogul automatically
increase the Inflation Index
each year. The maximum value for the 'Inflation Index'
is 100,000.
Commissioner Passwords
Commissioner Mode
If you enter
a password in this field, anyone loading this saved game
file will be unable to enter Commissioner
Mode without knowing this password.
Lock
Expenses
Checking this box will turn
off the ability for team owners to edit their Expenses
unless they know the Commissioner
Mode password (see above).
Delay
League Transactions
This feature is used by some
online leagues. With this
feature on, team owners will not be allowed to implement
trades or free agent signings (unless they know the Commissioner Mode
password). Instead, all trade offers and free agent bids
are recorded to the team
file that is sent to the League Comissioner for
each simulation. When the Commissioner imports team
files, each trade offer will be implemented if and
only if the other team in the trade entered the exact
same trade offer. A free agent bid will be
implemented if it is the highest bid for that player.
Simulation
Password
Similar to
the Commissioner Password, this password locks league
simulation. That is, users will be unable to use the
Play Menu to advance the calendar unless they know
this password. This feature is useful because
simulating games can be used as a way to predict the
career development of young players; it is often used
in conjunction with the "Hide Peak Ratings" checkbox
(see above).
Remember your
commissioner passwords. They cannot be
recovered.

Schedule Options
Schedule options
can only be changed before a season starts; not while
games are playing. At the start of each season, Baseball
Mogul will try to find a schedule
template that matches your league configuration.
Games Per Season
This box allows
you to determine how many games are played per season.
The game comes preset with 162 games per season.
Interleague Play
Checking this
box informs the computer scheduler that you'd like to
have teams from different leagues play each other during
the course of the season.
Unbalanced
Schedule
In an
"unbalanced" schedule, teams play opponents in their
own division much more than they play teams outside
their division. In a 162 game season, teams play each
division rival 18 times.
In a "balanced" schedule,
teams play league opponents roughly the same number of
times, regardless of division.
All
Star Game
Check this box to insert an All-Star Game
(and 3-day All-Star Break) in the schedule generated at
the start of each season. By default, the All-Star Game
is not played in years before 1933.
Home
Run Derby
If an All-Star Game is played, a Home Run
Derby will also be simulated if this box is checked. By
default, the Home Run Derby is not conducted in years
before 1985.
League Configuration
You can only edit
the league before a season starts; not while games are
playing.
League Names
Each League Name
is editable. If there are no teams in a league, that
league does not exist and cannot be edited.
Division Names
Next, you can
alter the names for the divisions within each league.
Mogul can handle up to three divisions per league, but
you don't have to have all three. You can have one or
two division(s) in each league.
Designated
Hitter Rule
The DH boxes
allow you to turn on and off the DH rule for each
league. You can make both leagues use the DH
rule, or neither. The designated hitter is a player on
your team who can be from any position who bats on
your team instead of the current pitcher.
Current
Date
This lets you
change the current date in the season. Use this with extreme
caution as is may corrupt the season schedule.
Start
Year
This
specificies the year your league starts. For example,
you could create a league that starts in 1930 and then
add players from that era. Changing this value will
erase any simulated seasons, and is only recommended
for use in creation of a Universe.dat
file.
Year
Women Enter Baseball
This
specifies the first year that women will enter the
league as minor league rookies. If you wish to play
without female rookies, type "0" in this field.
Note: Once you've made all
your changes to the league, hit Refresh to update the
display and register your changes.
Encyclopedia
Start Year
Specifies the
first year included in the HTML "Encyclopedia" output.
By default, this is 1901.
Newspaper
Enter the name of the newspaper as you would like it
to appear at the top of the Headlines
Page.
Inflation Index
A value used to adjust the magntitude of all
financial aspects of the game, such as salaries and
ticket prices. As a rough rule of thumb, this index
equals about 1/1000th of the highest salary in baseball.
So, for example, a setting of '25000' (modern day)
yields a top salary of about $25,000,000. A setting of
'100' yields a top salary of about $100,000 (wht Babe
Ruth was earning in 1927).
Historical
Relocation
By default,
teams in Baseball Mogul will automatically move from
city to city during the 20th century as they did in
real life. If you change this setting to
'ask first', Baseball Mogul will ask permission from
you before moving each team.
Historical
Expansion
By default,
Baseball Mogul will automatically add teams to
historical leagues in the same years when expansion
occurred in
real life. If you change this setting to 'ask
first', Baseball Mogul will ask permission from you
before adding any expansion team.
League Rules
Expansion
Draft Minimum Age
Specifies the
minimum age that a player must be in order to be taken
in an expansion draft.
All players below this age are ineligible to be
drafted by expansion teams. This is set to 23
by default. In other words, all prospects age 22 or
younger cannot be taken from their original team in an
expansion draft.
Trade
Amateur Draftees in First Year
Checking this
box allows trading players within the first year after
they are drafted. By default, players cannot be traded
for one year after they are selected in the amateur
draft (to match major league rules).
Cash
in Trades
Controls
the role that cash may play in trade offers. The
default value ("Match Contracts") specifies that the
cash included in a trade may not exceed the difference
in the remaining contracts of the players involved.
For example, if you trade a
player with $40 million left on his contract for a
player with only $5 million remaining on his contract,
you would be allowed to include up to $35 million in
cash, to pay the entire remaining salary of the player
you are trading away.
Don't
Allow |
Cash
may not be included in trade offers. |
Match Salaries |
Cash may be added to
trade offers, as long as the amount offered
doesn't exceed the amount needed to pay the
difference in salaries for the current season. |
Match Contracts |
The amount of cash
may not exceed the amount needed to pay the
difference in salaries for the remainder of each
player's current contract. |
Unlimited |
An unlimited amount
of cash may be added to either side of a trade
offer. |
|
Soft Cash Limit
The default "soft" cash limit (per team), used
to prevent any one team from hoarding too much
cash. Above this level, a team's revenue will be
adjusted downward (in proportion to the amount by
which the limit is exceeded).
Hard Cash
Limit
The absolute cash limit (per team). No team
may have a cash value higher than this amount
for any reason. To prevent data overflow, the
maximum cash limit is two billion dollars
($2,000,000,000).
Start Extra
Innings With Runner on 2B
In extra innings, starts each half-inning with a
runner on second base. (As of 2018, this is an
idea currently being tested in the minor
leagues, with the goal of shortening
extra-inning games. If this option is disabled,
it has not yet been implemented in Baseball
Mogul.)
Minimum
Batters Faced
The minimum number of batters that each pitcher
must face before leaving the game. Pitchers may
also meet this requirement by finishing the
inning in which they entered the game. (Major
League Baseball added a 3-batter
minimum for the 2020 baseball season.)

Playoffs
Wild
Card Teams
In leagues with 3 divisions, you can choose the
number of wild card teams in each league. In leagues
with 2 wild card teams, those teams will play each
other in a one-game showdown
to determine which one advances to the Division Series
round against a division winner.
Playoff
Series Lengths
Adjust the maximum length
(in games) for each of the playoff rounds. Values must
be an odd number between 1 and 9. For example, to award
the World Series to the first team to win 4 games, enter
7 in the edit box.
Note:
Playoff series lengths cannot be edited during
the season.
