PLAYER SETTINGS
This dialog box lets you
adjust the creation and development of players in your
baseball universe. The first column contains settings
that affect the creation of new players each year
(referred to as "rookies" or "amateur draft players").
The second column controls how all players develop as
they mature and age.
Talent Variation
Adjusts the difference in performance between the best players and worst players in the league. Increase these settings to get more seasons with extreme results (e.g. 50+ homers or .350+ batting average).
Career Paths
Average Peak Start
By default, the
average 'Peak Start' value for players available in the
Amateur Draft is about 25 years of age. This setting can
be used to lower the average 'Peak Start' to 21, or
raise it to 29.
Average Peak End
By default, the average
'Peak End' value for players available in the Amateur
Draft is about 31 years of age. This setting can be used
to lower the average 'Peak End' to 27, or raise it to
35.
Potential (Upside)
Adjusts the
average "Potential" rating for each player ("Potential"
can be edited in the Player
Editor). This also directly corresponds to each
player's "Upside" (the spread between "Overall" and
"Peak"). If you want more "major-league ready" players
on draft day, then you need to do 2 things:
#1) Increase
"Amateur Draft Talent" (see above).
#2) Reduce
"Potential (Upside)" (to decrease the number of
superstars created by step #1).
Career Longevity
Adjusts the
average "Longevity" value for each player (also editable
in the Player Editor).
Use
Historical Career Paths
If this box is checked,
Baseball Mogul will use career path data for historical
players. This data is stored in a file called CareerPaths.csv
in the 'players' folder inside Baseball Mogul's 'input'
folder:
[Baseball
Mogul Folder]/Input/Players/CareerPaths.csv
(You can view the folder
where Baseball Mogul is installed by choosing 'Open Game
Folder' from the Help Menu).
This file provides the
following data for historical players: 'Projected
Debut', 'Projected Retirement', 'Peak Start', 'Peak
End', 'Potential' and 'Longevity'. Using this data will
make the career trajectories of historical players more
similar to their actual historical careers. The Player
Editor can also be used to adjust these fields for
individual players.
Note that if this box is
checked, Baseball Mogul will overwrite career path data
for historical players at the start of each season with
data from the CareerPaths.csv file.

Variation
During Development
Aging Randomness
Sets the amount
of variation introduced into each player's talent levels
as he ages. If this value is set low, players will
follow a fairly predictable curve from draft day, to
peak performance, to a decline leading to retirement. If
this value is high, talent may vary a great deal along
this curve, and a player projected to have a strong
career is likely to flounder (and vice versa).
Draft Predictability
Sets the
reliability of the scouting ratings for players in the Amateur Draft. If this is
set to '-100%', there will be a high number of players
that look great on draft day but don't develop into
successful players. Similarly, a large number of star
players will come from later rounds in the draft.
In contrast, if this is set
to '+100%', virtually all future star players will be
easily identifiable on draft day (and thus, they will
tend to get picked in the first round or two).
Hall Of Fame Careers
This setting doesn't change
the overall talent level in a league,
but it does affect the number of true "Hall Of Fame
Careers" that are generated. It does this by setting how
easy it is for a superstar to maintain a high level of
performance for an entire career. If this is set to
'+100%', star players will tend to stay as star players
for most of their career (and mediocre players will stay
mediocre).
In contrast, if this is set
to '-100%', star players will frequently "fall back to
earth" (and mediocre players will more easily boost
their production). This would, for example, lead to
fewer players having 300 career wins or hitting 600 home
runs.
(To adjust the level of single-season
records, you should use the Simulation
Settings Dialog).
Player
Personality / Happiness
Effect on Negotiating
Every player's
negotiating style is affected by his personality traits
and by his happiness with his current team. This setting
lets you increase or reduce the magnitude of these
effects.
Effect on Performance
In Baseball
Mogul, a player's performance will improve over time if
he is happy, and decline if he is unhappy. This settings
lets you eliminate this effect entirely (by choosing
'-100%') or adjust the magnitude of the effect.
Emotional Negotiations
By default,
players will get angry in response to a (perceived)
lowball offer, causing them to increase their salary
demands. Uncheck this box to eliminate this behavior.
Fatigue
(Position Players)
Increase or decrease the
amount of fatigue incurred by position players for each
game (or partial game) played.
Amateur Draft Talent
Fictional Players (Batters)
Sets the talent
level of the average fictional batter created by Baseball
Mogul for the Amateur Draft.
Fictional Players
(Pitchers)
Sets the talent
level of the average fictional pitcher created by
Baseball Mogul for the Amateur
Draft.
Historical (Real)
Players
Sets the talent
level of the average historical player (loaded
from real-life historical stats) available in
the Amateur Draft.
College Players
Sets the talent
level of the average college-age player available in the
Amateur Draft, relative
to high-school players (that is, players that
have not attended college).
Repopulate
Draft Pool
Click this button to generate
an entirely new batch of Amateur
Draft players. This is useful if you want to see the
results of changes to the settings listed below this
button.
Talent Correlation
This section lets you
adjust how strongly correlated different talents are
when generating fictional players. A high setting (e.g.
+100%) will produce a high correlation between the two
listed abilities.
For example, if you set
"Power/Speed" to '+100%', this will mean that players
with high Power ratings will tend to have a high Speed
rating, and vice versa. And players with high Power but
lower Speed (and vice versa) will become rarer in the
draft pool.
Amateur
Draft Player Pool
Historical Rookies
This checkbox is only valid
for historical seasons. If checked, Baseball Mogul will
load historical players into the amateur draft each
season.
Fictional Rookies
If checked, Baseball Mogul
will create fictional players for each amateur draft. If
'Historical Rookies' is also checked, Baseball Mogul
will first load all relevant
historical players, and then fill the remainder of the
draft pool with fictional players. If this box is not
checked, Baseball Mogul will only use actual historical
rookies.
If you uncheck
both amateur draft options, Baseball Mogul
will skip the amateur draft each year. We
strongly discourage this, because your league
will have no players to replace those who
retire. However,
this option is useful to replay a single
season without the distraction of the amateur
draft.
