TRADE SETTINGS
DIALOG
This dialog box lets you change the behavior of the
artificial intelligence (AI) that evaluates trades
offered to computer-controlled teams. This valuation is
what determines whether a trade offer is accepted or
rejected.
The AI weighs a variety of factors when evaluating a
trade offer. This dialog box lets you adjust the weight
given to each of those factors. All settings are
expressed as a percentage, ranging from -100% to +100%
(relative to the default weighting).
Overview of Trade AI
The AI
evaluates each player in a trade by:
- Evaluating the player's projected value, in Wins
Above Replacement, over the course of their current
contract.
-
Adding any additional value the player has, such as
might be achieved by extending the player's current
contract, or by trading the player to another team.
-
Adjusting this value
for the team's current needs (e.g. a team will
reduce their valuation for a starting shortstop if
they already have an excellent starting
shortstop).
- Making additional adjustments for team's current
or projected position in the standings. A team in
contention for a playoff spot will place more value
on established players that can contribute to the
team immediately. Conversely, a team in last place
will give more weight to prospects and less to
veterans that have already reached their peak value.
- Adjusting upward the value of elite players. For
example, a player projected to be worth 6.0 WAR is
valued more highly than two players that project at
3.0 WAR. This is because of the rarity of elite
talent, and
-
Converting the above
value from Wins Above Replacement to dollars.
-
Discounting (i.e.
reducing) the above value for the amount of money
still owed to the player on his current contract
(including additional liabilities such as a player
option).
If the value of the
offered players exceeds the value of the players the
team is being asked to give up, the team accepts the
trade.
Discounting For Player
Salaries
This
specifies the importance given to step #7 in the above
list. If you increase this setting, players with high
salaries will become less valuable in trade offers. If
you set this to "-100%", player salaries will be
completely ignored when evaluating players (i.e.
players will be evaluated entirely on their talent and
projected performance).
Importance of Team
Payroll Budget
The degree to
which a team's payroll budget affects player discounting
(step #7). Because a team with a high payroll budget is
able to afford more expensive players, they will give
less weight to a player's salary when assessing that
player's value. Note that this adjustment only affects
the discounting process. If "Discounting For Player
Salaries" is set to "-100%", this setting will have no
effect on the AI.
Weight
Given To Prospects
Adjusts
the value given to prospects, relative to players
that have already reached their peak value.
Increasing this setting will mean that teams are
more willing to trade away veteran players but
less willing to trade away prospects.
Weight Given To
Elite Players
In step
#5 above, elite players are given a bonus
relative to league-average players. Increasing
this setting will increase the amount of this
bonus. Setting this to "-100%" will eliminate
this bonus completely. Increasing this setting
will mean that teams are less willing to trade
away their star players.
Weight
Given To Team Standings
This affects the
adjustments made to a player's value in step #4. Setting
this to "-100%" will eliminate this adjustment, meaning
that all teams evaluate trades without considering whether
they competing for a championship or shifting into
"rebuilding" mode.
Weight
Given To Specific Team Needs
Affects
the magnitude of the adjustments made
in step #3. Setting this to "-100%"
means that teams will evaluate players
according to their projected win
value, without making any adjustments
for whether the player fills a
specific need on the team.
Weight
Given To Cash Included In Deal
This
only affects trade offers in which
cash is also going from one team to another
as part of the deal (this is often
done to help one team cover the salary
of an expensive player that they are
receiving). Increasing this setting
means that less cash will be required
in order to created a balanced trade.
